Have you ever noticed how some people give directions using pubs? ‘Go left at the corner of The Prince Albert, just after the King’s Head turn right and it’s just past the Rose and Crown on the left’.
I must admit, I’m guilty of this, in my own little way, when directing people around central London. Rather than using pubs I use hotels and venues as my landmark references rather than the much more obvious choices of The Houses of Parliament, The London Eye or Marble Arch.
I’m pretty proud of what I like to call my ‘Venue Mind Palace’, I’ve worked hard on it for the last ten years and kept it topped up by actively seeking out new venues and attending site visits.
The latter can sometimes be quite tricky, being a small company allowing myself the time to get out of the office to visit venues and hotels is difficult especially if a last minute brief comes through or someone needs the world on a stick yesterday.
Luckily, living in London there are three great shows every year which mean I can maximise my time out of the office and feel like I’ve travelled the country and world exploring new venues and hotels.
First up, off I trot to International Confex, being held 1st – 2nd March at Olympia. ‘it provides the largest buying forum for the events industry with venues, destinations, supplies and buyers networking and doing business’.
In the summer it’s off to the (relatively) new kid on the block (it’s been going a few years now but I can clearly remember a time when it didn’t exist so it’s still new for me), The Meeting Show, again at Olympia, 13th – 15th June. ‘the Meeting Show is the premier event for the UK inbound and outbound meetings industry…..Organised by meeting professionals for meeting professionals, it is focused around a large exhibition, networking opportunities and professional education’.
I welcome in the Autumn with a jaunt across the City to Old Billingsgate to check out Square Meal Venues & Events, this year its 20th – 21st September. ‘Featuring five floors of unlimited event inspiration….with over 250 venues and event suppliers, plus expert seminars and tasting sessions’.
See you there?
